These school holidays, ICE will be running a music and filmmaking course for young people from refugee backgrounds. The workshops will be run by ARIA nominated MC TREY, African- Australian hip-hop artists True Vibenation and experienced Western Sydney filmmakers.
Around the globe, digital stories also called ‘mini-films’ are quickly becoming the format for relaying experiences and ideas. Combining video and hip-hop music, which has traditionally been the voice of marginalised young people, we now have a recipe for creating powerful stories in a medium that appeals to young people.
Refugee Allstars will train 10 young people from refugee backgrounds in song writing, script writing, music recording and production, filmmaking, digital photography and online film preparation. At the end of the course, all participants will have produced their own ‘musical digital story’ and be ready to share with the world. Participants will be encouraged to showcase their work online and at events and festivals.
Refugee Allstars will run for two weeks during the April School Holidays on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 14 – 24 April, 10am – 4pm at Holroyd Youth Services, 289 Merrylands Road, Merrylands.
“We are extremely lucky to have such a diverse range of cultures in Australia and specifically in Western Sydney. These workshops aim to equip young people with new skills to tell their unique stories, which we can all learn from.” Said MC Trey
Refugee Allstars is presented in partnership with Holroyd Youth Services. This project is made possible with the support of our funding bodies and partners including Department of Immigration and Citizenship through the Australian Government’s Diverse Australia program, Sydney Community Foundation, Holroyd City Council, Arts NSW and Australia Council for the Arts, SWITCH Multimedia and Digital Arts Access Centre, Parramatta City Council, and Baulkham Hills, Holroyd, Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre.
